Why We Recommend It
Cast iron is about as simple and safe as cookware gets. It's just iron. No coatings, no chemicals, no PFAS. Lodge has been making cast iron in Tennessee since 1896, and their skillets are the most accessible entry point to chemical-free cooking.
Lodge skillets come pre-seasoned with soybean oil, so they're ready to use straight from the box. With regular use and proper care, they develop a natural non-stick patina that only improves with age. Many people cook with cast iron that's been passed down through generations.
At under £30 for the 8" skillet, it's also the most affordable option on our list. The 10.25" (26cm) is around £35-40 on Amazon UK and is the most versatile size for everyday cooking.

What to Know
Cast iron is heavy. The 10.25" skillet weighs about 2.3kg. This is normal and part of what makes it work so well.
Clean with hot water and a brush or scraper. A small amount of soap is fine. Dry thoroughly and apply a thin layer of oil after each use.
Cast iron adds a small amount of dietary iron to your food, especially when cooking acidic foods like tomatoes.
Not ideal for very acidic dishes (wine sauces, tomato-heavy recipes) until well-seasoned, as the acid can react with the iron.
