How We Research
Our process for finding and evaluating safer products
Important note: We are not scientists, chemists, or laboratory technicians. We don't have access to product testing facilities. Our research is based on publicly available information, manufacturer claims, and established knowledge about materials and chemicals.
Our Research Process
Identify product categories
We focus on everyday products where PFAS are commonly found: cookware, food storage, personal care, textiles, and children's products.
Research materials and manufacturing
We learn which materials are known to contain PFAS (like PTFE coatings) and which alternatives exist (ceramic, cast iron, stainless steel).
Find available products
We search for products available in the UK that use safer materials. We check manufacturer websites, contact brands directly when needed, and read product specifications.
Evaluate brand transparency
We favour brands that are transparent about their materials and manufacturing. Vague claims like "non-toxic" without specifics are a red flag.
Consider practical factors
A product needs to actually work well to be worth recommending. We consider reviews, durability, price, and availability in the UK.
Write honest recommendations
We explain why we recommend each product, note any limitations or trade-offs, and suggest alternatives at different price points.
What We Look For
Green flags
- Clear statements about materials used
- Explicit PFAS-free or PTFE-free claims
- Third-party certifications (where applicable)
- Transparent manufacturing information
- Established brand with good track record
- Positive reviews mentioning durability and quality
Red flags
- Vague "non-toxic" or "eco-friendly" claims without specifics
- Reluctance to disclose materials or coatings
- "PFOA-free" without mentioning other PFAS (PFOA is just one chemical in the PFAS family)
- Too-good-to-be-true pricing for premium materials
- Lack of company information or contact details
Our Limitations
We want to be upfront about what we can and cannot do:
- We can't test products ourselves. We rely on manufacturer claims, certifications, and material knowledge.
- Formulations change. A product we researched six months ago might have different ingredients today.
- Supply chains are complex. Even well-intentioned brands may have contamination issues they're unaware of.
- We might be wrong. Despite our best efforts, we may miss something or make errors.
We do our best to keep information current and correct any errors we discover. If you spot something that seems wrong, please let us know.
Sources We Trust
- Peer-reviewed scientific research on PFAS
- Government health agencies (UK HSE, EFSA, EPA)
- Environmental working groups and advocacy organisations
- Direct manufacturer communications
- Independent testing organisations (when available)
