Why We Started HopeBear
Like many parents, we started paying closer attention to what's in the products we bring into our homes once children arrived. The more we learned about PFAS - the so-called "forever chemicals" found in everything from frying pans to food packaging - the more we wanted to make changes.
But finding reliable information wasn't easy. Most resources were American, with products not available in the UK. Scientific papers were dense and alarming. Online forums were full of fear but short on practical solutions. We spent countless hours researching, cross-referencing, and testing products to find safer alternatives that actually worked.
HopeBear was born from that research. We wanted to create the resource we wished had existed - practical, UK-focused advice on safer products, without the overwhelming fear and guilt that often comes with this topic.
Our Approach
Hopeful, not fearful
We believe in empowering families with information, not scaring them into action. Small changes add up. You don't need to throw everything out and start again - just swap things as they wear out.
Practical recommendations
We focus on products you can actually buy in the UK, at various price points. Not everyone can afford the most expensive option, and that's okay.
Honest about limitations
We're not scientists, and we don't have access to testing laboratories. We do our best with available information, and we're transparent when we can't verify claims or when products have trade-offs.
What's With the Name?
Bears are protective, nurturing, and strong. "Hope" reflects our belief that making positive changes is always possible, and that small steps in the right direction matter. Plus, it's friendly and approachable - exactly how we want this topic to feel.
